English actress and writer Fanny Kemble toured the US at age 23 in 1833 and wrote this account of springtime visits to Blue Hill and the Granite Railway in Quincy.
     By the time it was published in 1835 she had married wealthy slaveholder Pierce Butler. She resumed touring after her divorce and her most famous book, Journal of a Residence on a Georgian Plantation, appeared in 1863. She spent many Octobers in Lenox, MA.
