Quarry Hills Water Quality Impacts

March 1998 data from two vernal pools in Blue Hills Reservation

On March 10, approximately two weeks after Big Dig sediments invaded the 2-acre vernal pool north of the Sawcut Notch path in the Blue Hills Reservation, Michele Cobban-Barden, Water Quality Director for the Neponset River Watershed Assn., took water samples for testing at the pool and at a nearby unimpacted pool on the north slope of Rattlesnake Hill. Following are the test results, originating at the lab of the Charles River Watershed Assn.

Rattlesnake Hill Pool
(unimpacted)

Sawcut Notch Pool (impacted)
Salinity
(parts per thousand)
0 .3

Total Suspended Solids
(milligrams/liter)

Total Dissolved Solids
(milligrams/liter)

Conductivity
(microsiemens/centimeter)
