News from the Friends of the Blue
Hills January 10, 2006 Last week the Friends of the Blue Hills board of trustees voted to continue our suit challenging the Wetlands Act variance allowing MWRA to fill over half the Blue Hills Reservoir on Chickatawbut Road in Quincy for a $30 million water tank project. The variance awarded by DEP does not require MWRA to replace any of the protected wetlands that will be lost, and so will produce the largest net loss of wetlands permitted anywhere in Massachusetts since at least 1990. Continued pumping and draining by MWRA has concentrated the remaining water in two shallow pools at either end, where most of the remaining fish and other aquatic life are presumably holed up. A surprise: two 3 ft diameter concrete intakes dating from circa 1950 are now exposed. Some annotated photos taken Saturday are here (click on individual images or view as slideshow). ___________________________________________________________________________ You have received this message because you are on the Friends of the Blue Hills email list of members and other interested parties.
