No reprieve for fish at Blue Hills Reservoir
February 10, 2006

After four months of draining, the Blue Hills Reservoir on Chickatawbut Road is down about 35 ft and fish populations that have been undisturbed since 1977 are confined to a few inches of water in the east end.

Because of the unprecedented exemption to the Wetlands Protection Act granted to MWRA by DEP, none of the 8.7 acres of open water habitat that MWRA plans to fill for its $35 million tank project will be replaced, contrary to the state's long-standing "no net loss of wetlands" policy.

Friends of the Blue Hills is challenging the exemption in court and we have filed legislation requiring the wetlands to be replaced, but it will be too late for these fish.
