News from the Friends of the Blue Hills

Help us to continue to build momentum for Reservoir bill
February 12, 2006

Dear Friends,

Good news on House Docket 4933. This bill, introduced by Rep. Bruce Ayers, would require the MWRA to adhere to the state’s no-net loss policy by replacing the 8 acres of wetlands the agency will destroy in the Blue Hills Reservoir.

Support for the bill is growing. In addition to Rep. Ayers, four new legislators have co-sponsored the bill: Reps. Robert Coughlin, Geraldine Creedon, William Galvin and Walter Timilty.

What You Can Do

I. The next step is for the House Docket the bill to be assigned to a House Committee. Please contact Representative Angelo Scaccia, House Rules Committee Chair, and ask him to release Docket # 4933 so it may be assigned to a committee. See talking points below.

III. If your representative has not co-sponsored, ask them to co-sponsor Docket #4933 and send a letter to Rep. Scaccia, asking him to release Docket #4933 so it may be assigned to a committee. (If you don't know your representative, go to: www.vote-smart.org.)

Talking points for Rep. Scaccia

--We cannot afford to disregard wetland laws to accommodate the largest construction project in the Blue Hills in 50 years
--Wetlands are treasured in our communities for their ability to naturally filter contaminants, alleviate flooding, and provide specialized habitat for a host of plant, animal and bird species.
--MWRA's intent to permanently destroy more wetlands than any other project in the state in years demonstrates the vulnerability of wetlands statewide and the importance of abiding by the established laws that protect them.
--Four legislators have co-sponsored Docket #4933, showing clear support for this legislation.
--Please release Docket #4933 so it may be assigned to a committee.
